In the 1990s, Michele Gulino was primarily involved in tartaric production as the Chief Executive Officer of Nueva IQT S.L., the leading supplier of Spanish tartaric acid. Tartaric acid is a natural compound, employed as food additive E334 in various industries (food, pharmaceuticals, construction) and manufactured from wine by-products by treating grape pomace with caustic soda and sulphuric acid to crystallize the solution.
For many years, he nurtured strategic relationships and facilitated trading with a number of leading food brands such as Ferrero, Danisco, Kerry Group, and Puratos. However, after losing penetration in the food industry due to the rising popularity of cheap, synthetic tartaric acid produced from petrol derivatives, he decided to direct his focus on the pharmaceutical industry.
He worked with global conglomerates like Pfizer, GSK, Beecham, Reckitt Benckiser, Bristol Myers Squibb, Bayer, Abbott Laboratories, Adcock Ingram, and Kirsch Pharma. As a result of a shocking revelation during an antibiotic preparation project with a pharmaceutical, he was determined to dedicated the majority of his investments towards sustainable, organic and fair trade projects.
During his time as CEO, he also pursued a number of exciting investment opportunities such as the development of an aparthotel in Costa Brava and becoming majority shareholder in Alcogroup Holding, one of the biggest producers and distributors of ethanol fuel in Europe. As a global conglomerate, Alcogroup Holding sold its beverage brand, Svedka, to Constellation Group for $384m in 2007. Svedka was the fastest growing vodka in the US in the early 2000s.
Today, Michele is deeply involved in the beverage industry being an investor in Organic Grape Spirit Ltd. At their purpose-built facility in the UK, the company offers bespoke spirit creation with high-quality ingredients, low-temperature continuous distillation and automated processes to achieve control over every flavour parameter - using a fraction of the energy of traditional pot distillers.
